Under the Sixth Phase Government led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Uvinza–Malagarasi section of the SGR, measuring 180 km on the Tanzanian side and 187 km on the Burundian side, is in the early stages of preparation including fundraising, technical design, and investor consultations.
When completed, the project is estimated to cost US$2.1 billion, with construction expected to take approximately 6 years.
This section is part of the larger Tanzania–Burundi SGR initiative, which aims to enhance freight and passenger transport, connect coastal and inland cities and ports, promote international trade and investment, and provide direct and indirect employment to citizens on both sides of the border.
